Coloured Pencil Drawing on Tan Toned Paper by Sam Pickett, 2020
The Somniator is part of a larger series (six pieces in total, three of which are currently being exhibited at the Amina Malik Gallery, London).
In Norse Mythology the Norns are female beings that rule the destiny of gods and humans alike. In the realms of psychology we will often find computer terminology e.g ‘reprogramming our behaviour’ to aid human understanding in the context of the era. In Freudian times the steam engine was the great invention of the day. Phrases like ‘letting off steam’ appeared in sync with the general understanding of the times. In the 1500’s Giordano Bruno proposed that the stars were distant Suns surrounded by their own planets. He did this long before the technology was in place to confirm anything through an intuitive imaginative leap. “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic” Arthur C Clark.
